About Dr. Reza Mirfayzi, Minstp Cphys
I started my science career with a PhD in High Energy Density Science (HEDS) with ultra-intense lasers. I have been a PI and co-investigator in multiple experiments in the UK, Japan, and the USA, in which I explored laser-plasmas, Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) and application development for science and industry, leading to over forty publications and a patent. In 2018, I joined the Institute of Laser Engineering (ILE) at Osaka University, Japan as an Assistant Professor in the Nuclear Photonics (NP) group. The NP group was established in the same year to explore the new area of Inertial Confinement, nuclear reactions and generating high-energy photons and secondary particle sources, performed with picosecond beams of LFEX ultra-intense. LFEX is part of the FIREX program (Fast Ignition Realization Experiment), was created to heat fusion fuels up to 5-10 keV (the temperature required for nuclear fusion). Initially, a seed light of a femtosecond fibre oscillator is amplified in a three-staged optical parametric amplification (OPCPA) configuration, then passed into rod amplifiers before being transported, compressed, and focused into the target area for an experiment. I also worked with Hamamatsu's New Photonics Industries (GPI) on direct-drive and fast ignition large-scale projects, designing science, and further measuring fusion neutrons to evaluate the hotspot temperature. Towards the end of 2020, I returned to the United Kingdom to join MAGPIE (Mega Ampere Generator for Plasma Implosion Experiments) in the plasma physics group, at Imperial College London. MAGPIE is a pulsed power device, which stores electrical charge in capacitor banks and discharges in a short time. Having four MARX banks, using four pulse forming lines, they merged into a single vertical transmission line delivering over 1 MA peak current with 250 ns rise time. In addition, I built a pinch device (Machine-1) from First Light at the college to produce x-rays. Performing several shock-wave related experiments, I later joined Tokamak Energy Ltd. The first private fusion company aimed to produce fusion power using spherical tokamaks (STs). At Tokamak Energy, a spherical reactor (ST40) is used to confine the plasma and create a condition similar to the sun in our solar system. Here we are trying to replicate the conditions found in the centres of stars to make clean energy on Earth via fusion.
