About Simon Schultz

I'm a London-based Australian expat - initially trained in physics, applied math and electrical engineering at Monash and Sydney Universities, before a doctorate in neuroscience at Oxford. I am Director of the Centre for Neurotechnology at Imperial College London, which aims to foster collaborative research at the interface of neuroscience and engineering across our Faculties of Engineering, Medicine and Natural Sciences. I run the Neural Coding and Neurodegenerative Disease Laboratory in the Department of Bioengineering. My research team aim to understand how information is encoded and stored in memory by mammalian brains, and how it is retrieved for use in cognition. We are further interested in how this dysfunctions in neurological disease states such as Alzheimer’s Disease, and in developing therapeutic approaches to enhance or restore memory circuit function. We develop technology for neuroscience experiments, particularly optical technologies for interrogating brain circuitry. These new technologies confront us with very high-dimensional datasets which require new analysis tools, and development of such tools (particularly making use of information theory, graph theory and neural manifold techniques) is also a major lab focus. We are interested in hearing from potential industry research partners in the neurotechnology field, and have a track record of fruitful collaboration with industry.See http://www.schultzlab.org for more information about our work.My Google Scholar profile is here: https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=OGhN4WkAAAAJ&hl=enI'm interested in connecting here with anyone interested in neurotechnology - whether technology for treating brain disorders, technology for understanding how the brain works, or technology derived *from* understanding how the brain works. In addition, I am following accounts in the environment and renewable energy space here, out of personal interest.

  • Imperial College London
    Professor Of Neurotechnology
Imperial College London Aug 2017 - Present
  • Imperial College London
    Director, Centre For Neurotechnology
Imperial College London Nov 2013 - Present
I founded the Centre for Neurotechnology with a £10M grant from EPSRC and charity and industry partners to establish a Centre for Doctoral Training in Neurotechnology for Life and Health. Over the past decade I have led Imperial's efforts to establish itself as the foremost location in Europe for research at the interface of engineering and the neurosciences.
  • Imperial College London
    Reader In Neurotechnology
Imperial College London Jul 2013 - Aug 2017
    South Kensington, London
  • Imperial College London
    Royal Society Industry Fellow
Imperial College London Apr 2012 - Apr 2016
  • Imperial College London
    Senior Lecturer
Imperial College London Sep 2008 - Jul 2013
In around 2007-8 we moved into the current lab space, although our footprint has enlarged considerably in the meantime.
  • Imperial College London
    Lecturer
Imperial College London Aug 2004 - Sep 2008
I founded my laboratory at Imperial College London in 2004 (continuing to go over to Michael Häusser's lab in the evenings to perform 2P experiments). My equivalent of the "this is just your temporary space until the refurb is done" was getting the lab next to the Honda Wind Tunnel (which funnily enough wasn't running when they showed me around). It was powered by 415V and made an awful lot of both mechanical and electrical noise, so that we had to stop during experiments when it was running.

This was a sabbatical. I am afraid the book is still mostly in my head, but I published quite a few papers; the research done in this period also led later to a paper in Nature Neuroscience on how the structure of memory representations changes when you learn something new.
  • University College London
    Senior Research Fellow
University College London May 2003 - Jul 2004
During my second postdoc, I carried out research in Michael Häusser's laboratory, using two-photon calcium imaging to image activity in the dendrites of populations of cerebellar Purkinje cells. I was also affiliated, and partially funded by, the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit.
  • Howard Hughes Medical Institute
    Research Associate
Howard Hughes Medical Institute May 1999 - Apr 2003
I carried out experimental research in visual neuroscience in the laboratory of Professor Tony Movshon, together with furthering my research into information theoretic neural data analysis.
  • Australian National University
    Visiting Fellow
Australian National University Nov 1998 - Mar 1999
After finishing my PhD, I visited the Psychobiology Unit at ANU (Sagar Vidyasagar, Mike Calford and Bill Levick), where I worked with Sagar on patch clamp recordings in the cat visual system.
