Computational Astrophysicist
I worked for four years as a PhD candidate and just over a year as a postdoctoral researcher in the group of Prof. Tassos Fragos. My research specialized in theoretical and computational astrophysics, with a focus on binary black hole formation and gravitational-wave astrophysics.Selected achievements: - built innovative and accurate Monte Carlo binary black hole population synthesis models to predict their observable properties with a specific focus on black hole spins. My models have already played a key role in shaping the current field of gravitational wave astrophysics. - used Bayesian hierarchical model selection to constrain the formation origin of the observed population of black hole mergers. My models showcased that a mixture of formation channels is preferred over a single pathway dominating the formation of detected merging binary black holes. - predicted the existence of a correlation between black hole spins and their merger redshifts and later inferred it from the data. - presented theoretical evidence for a connection between observed long gamma-ray bursts and the formation of highly spinning binary black hole mergers. - presented theoretical evidence for the existence of massive black hole mergers (~30 times the mass of the sun) in Milky Way-like galaxies.Publications:co-authored 30 research articles, in 15 of which I am the first author or leading contributor. According to NASA-ADS on January 2024, my publications have attracted 1000+ citations, and my h-index is 13.Visiting positions: - visiting researcher at Northwestern University in the group of Prof. Vicky Kalogera (3 months) - visiting researcher at Flatiron Institute, Simons Foundation in the group of Prof. Will Farr (2 weeks).Public speech: - 8 invited talks (incl. MIT, Northwestern University, Flatiron Institute, Zurich University). - 11 conference presentations.Mentoring: - 6 bachelor's and 5 master's students' projects/thesis in astrophysics & computer science.
Software Developer
POSYDON is a next-generation open-source python binary-star population synthesis code incorporating detailed stellar structure and binary simulation models to study the formation processes of gravitational-wave sources. See https://posydon.orgContributions: - led code development (150k+ lines of code committed) & coordinated the developer team (10+ people). - leading the design & development of the core code structure and API interface. - generated, processed & visualised large time-series simulation data sets > 20 TB using >3M CPU-hours on HPC facilities. - supervised junior developers who built a Django web application interface & a visualisation library. - consultant for the SQL database developer team.
Master Thesis
"The boundary terms of the Einstein-Hilbert action and alternative spacetime geometries of General Relativity" supervised by Prof. Philippe Jetzer, Prof. Lavinia Heisenberg and Prof. Gian Michele Graf.
