A part of NASA’s National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program since 1990, the ISGC continually strives to improve and inspire Iowa’s future in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The ISGC supports aerospace research, education, and outreach activities for all Iowans through five program categories: internships, fellowships, scholarships; higher education; research infrastructure; precollege; and informal education.The ISGC carries out its goals with the help of six universities across the state of Iowa, as well as a number of private industry, educational and government organizations, and science museums. Funding from the ISGC for grants and projects is allocated through our affiliates.

Open Engineering, LLC dba Aerodyne Labs was formed in 2003 to do custom electrical engineering work for a company in Des Moines, IA. In 2011 we adopted the name Aerodyne Labs to reflect a change in business strategy. Today we work on custom electronics and other engineering solutions and we have a focus on solutions for the aerospace engineering industry. Recently we have focused on applications for high altitude balloons and small satellites.

I am the president of the Stratospheric Ballooning Association, an organization that has the goals to promote high altitude ballooning. Our core purpose is to make safe stratospheric ballooning accessible to everyone and to encourage HAB activities in STEM education.

Oversee student projects and support engineer for the Aerospace Engineering Department. I run the Make to Innovate (M:2:I) program in the Aerospace Engineering department which has over 170 students and 21 projects. These projects include things like the High Altitude Balloon Experiments in Technology (HABET), CySAT (Cubesat project), several UAV projects and projects tied to industry and we have some tied to NASA. Some projects (such as HABET and CySAT) I advise over directly. For others there are other faculty that are involved that advise and I simply oversee. I also oversee the laboratories used for these projects and the budget for the program.

As the committee chair I managed and ran the 2nd Annual Academic High Altitude Conference which was held at Iowa State University in June 2011. I oversaw the committee, reviewed submitted abstracts, papers, and posters, managed the budget and worked with our conference planning group at ISU. The conference was a success and we had 25 papers presented with over 50 in attendence.
