I have spent over 30 years building software and hardware solutions for digital television and consumer electronics. After writing my first computer game on a 1KB Sinclair ZX81, I graduated to the Commodore Amiga which led me to join Commodore as a member of the core Amiga team in West Chester, PA in 1990. From there I moved to Silicon Valley in the early 1990s to work for 3DO on their Video-On-Demand trial in Omaha. In 1997 I was recruited as the first employee of ReplayTV, where I architected and built the world's first commercial PVR system. After leaving ReplayTV to start my own consulting business, I joined Netflix to lead their investigation into building an internet streaming consumer device. With Netflix streaming on every connected TV system, I’d say that worked out well!Having experienced the difficulties of developing a compelling User Interface with primitive tools and limited hardware I jumped on the chance to join Adobe to integrate Flash into network connected TV devices in 2007. My experience with Flash sparked a fascination with the idea of a cloud rendering service, prompting me to start my own company, Tooyah, to build out such a system.A year later, I co-founded Net2TV Inc to bring free advertising-supported long-form television programming to Smart TVs and connected devices under the brand name of Portico.tv. Three years later the Net2TV engineering team was recruited by Pluto TV and has been instrumental in growing Pluto TV into the leading Free Ad Supported TV (FAST) product on this planet (and beyond). Pluto TV was acquired by Viacom in March 2019 and I was tasked with building an Architecture team within Pluto TV to oversee Pluto TV's architecture as it grew to >$1B/yr in revenue and roughly 80MM monthly viewers.Viacom then merged with CBS to become ViacomCBS, and was rebranded as Paramount Global in February 2022. In January 2023 the Pluto TV architecture team's responsibility was expanded to include all Paramount Streaming brands of Pluto TV, Paramount+, and the former Viacom brands MTV, Comedy Central, Nickleodeon etc.ReplayTV, Netflix streaming and Net2TV all have one thing in common; I was the first engineer on the project, I architected and developed core parts of the system, and they all went into production.I hold a BSc(Hons) in Computer Science from the University of Greenwich, have won multiple technical awards (Emmys for ReplayTV and Pluto TV) and have contributed to several patents.Specialties: System architecture, software development, consumer electronics, digital video, project management

Large complex systems are built by combining small simple components - we look at the system holistically to ensure the pieces fit together.Day to day, the architecture team works with the other engineering teams to drive design reviews and documentation to ensure we’re using the right components in the right place. We advise on cross team initiatives and we take on projects that don’t necessarily fit anywhere else within engineering but that are needed to grow the company, aid developers, or introduce new technology. -

Founder, CtoTooyah Feb 2011 - Jun 2012Tooyah solves the problem of SmartTV platform fragmentation by providing a single framework for building SmartTV applications. The traditional approach to a fragmented environment has been to build a middleware library that is ported to every possible platform, but that rarely if ever works successfully. Instead, Tooyah takes the view that there's only one platform that matters any more, and that's the web - HTML5+CSS+JS. Also, there's only one standard hardware component that every TV manufacturer is guaranteed to provide, and that's an audio/video decoder. So Tooyah has built a prototype WebKit-based browser that runs in the cloud. The Tooyah browser is viewed on the SmartTV as a real-time low-latency a/v stream that is sent over the internet, "straight Tooyah TV".Tooyah has two patents pending (see below)
