I am a firm believer in user-centred design. Throughout my career, I strive to understand the needs and aspirations of customers. I use this understanding and insight to craft compelling long-term visions for businesses and drive them to achieve it. I have applied this approach to help companies from different industries and various life-stages to stand out against their competition.In 2012 during a meeting with the board of Shanghai ShanChuan Property Development Ltd. about Lilacs International, their new 100,000 sqm office and retail mixed-use building, I pitched for using a user-centred design methodology to formulate the retail tenant strategy straight after a board member proposed a generic big international retail-brand-led tenant strategy. I broke business etiquettes in China by expressing my view blatantly as a junior, but I couldn’t help it, as the proposed strategy was based on stereotypes and no efforts had been made to understand the actual audience of the project. To my surprise, instead of being scolded, I was asked to conduct research to improve this understanding. With no pre-conception to fall back on, I went about immersing myself in the neighbourhood. The finding was unexpected: local target customers appreciate self-improvement and authenticity - would rather experience foreign luxury brands in their country of origin. ShanChuan Property adjusted its retail tenant strategy accordingly. Since opening to the public, all of the experienced-based educational businesses and original local brands have been reporting healthy turnover, and over 40% of those working in the building consider it the No.1 destination for a night out after work. The building also achieved an occupancy rate of the high 90s.This project cemented my belief that creative endeavour should be rooted in and inspired by a solid understanding of customers and their motivations, which brought me many successes over the years as a freelance design consultant in the UK. It was on this belief that I founded Sparks. We help users better organise, assimilate and utilise the content they consume to accelerate their personal growth. I hope to build an experience that is enjoyable, intuitive and meaningful for life-long learners.
