About Stacey Schaefer
I lead the Midlife in the U.S. Affective Neuroscience Project, which is part of the large national longitudinal MIDUS study. I have over a decade of experience leading and overseeing large research studies of human participants collecting both psychophysiological and neuroimaging measures of emotional responses in addition to extensive behavioral and cognitive measures. These measures are combined with survey and questionnaire data as well as biomarkers to detect relationships between individual differences in emotional response styles, cognitive abilities, personality, life experiences, health, and brain aging, brain structure, and brain function. I lead a team of researchers, including full time staff members, postdoctoral researchers, and students and mentor trainees. My primary research goal has been focused on understanding how emotional response styles, including the magnitude and duration of negative vs. positive responses, are associated with health and well-being through their interactions with cognition, behavior, and life experiences and how they contribute to accelerated vs. delayed brain aging.

Associate Scientist
I lead the UW-Madison's Center for Healthy Minds contribution to the longitudal Midlife in the United States National Study of Health and Well-Being (the MIDUS Neuroscience Project). In addition, I am the principal investigator of a study examining how individual differences in emotional processes may play a role in the development of Alzheimer’s Disease.I am also a co-Principal Investigator on a large R01-funded study examining the import of three fundamental dimensions of affective chronometry: a) how quickly or slowly a person recovers from adversity; b) the extent to which a person savors positive emotion, and c) how an individual’s emotional responses change (diminish or increase in intensity) across repeated provocations. The import of these affective chronometric measures are being characterized for varied domains including emotional memory, stress reactivity, mental health, cognition, daily emotional experiences, and reward responsivity, while we identify the critical functional and structural brain substrates underlying these relationships.
