Doctoral Researcher
My doctoral research focuses on the human rights dimension in Sino-African relations. The focus is primarily on the interrogation and problematisation of the discourse of human rights in Sino-African relations. Within this it challenges representations of these relations as well as the human rights component of these relations. It challenges the dominant narrative that human rights are necessarily absent and/or detrimental in the context of Sino-African relations, and instead draws on postcolonial (twail scholarship), culturally-sensitive as well as decolonial approaches to problematize the discourse. It reframes the discourse, providing an (re)interpretation that draws upon crtical constructivist IR theory and a decolonial approach to account for historical and cultural factors often left out of dominant frameworks.
