CIHR Healthy Youth Catalyst Grant - Identifying health research and knowledge mobilization priorities for promoting health equity in Canada’s youth - Dr. Carla Hilario

Lead a group of over 50 youth from across Canada in helping to become Canada’s leader in youth engagement and education pertaining to child and youth health. Work with external stakeholders in finding ways to partner and collaborate and provide a youth perspective. Provide direct support and collaboration on the knowledge translation and dissemination of various projects and initiatives, maximizing national youth understanding and data uptake.

Connect with different child/youth health organizations and stakeholders to determine their needs and how YCRH can fit, coordinate with the Director of Events and the Sandbox Project if partners are interested in hosting a joint event, generate regular and relevant content for the YCRH Facebook and Twitter pages in collaboration with the Executive Director(s) and other interested YCRH members, liaise with the Sandbox Project to provide YCRH updates for the quarterly newsletter

Collaborate on projects that align with youth mental health and engagement. Provide insights from lived expertise with mental health challenges on an as needed basis.

The Youth Programs Lead is responsible for the overall supervision and administration of the youth programs, including project management, planning, organizing, staffing, leading, growing, and risk management of program activities. Programs include but are not limited to; GuySpace, YSpace, PowerCamp, YLeaders, and Youth Advisory Council). The Team Lead is responsible for ensuring all YWCA procedures, policies, and budgets are followed and ensuring the staff they supervise comply with these procedures and policies, in addition to effective leadership and management. The Team lead is responsible for ensuring that requirements of data collection, reporting and other components of the evaluation for the third-party evaluator and funder are met. The Team Lead contributes to advancing and achieving the YWCA mission, vision, values, guiding principles, strategic plan, business plan, and departmental plan.

Delivered and facilitated in-school mental health projects and programs.Coordinated and deliver the Youth in Action for Mental Health program in high schools around New Brunswick, which included working alongside youth in high schools on the program modules, facilitating the youth meetings around the modules, and helping them with final projects related to mental health.Supported other Partners for Youth projects and initiatives as needed.Kept diligent records of school visits and activities to include in annual reports.Traveled throughout New Brunswick to work with high schools across the province.Liaised with schools, Integrated Service Delivery Teams, and Community Coordinators.

Created an evaluation plan to evaluate the effectiveness of the programming at Motivate by developing feedback methods, conducting participant interviews, and recording sessions for data evaluation. Assisted in the creation of the Strategic Plan, by helping to analyze the vision and goals for the organization and helped to identify any areas that needed improvements

Assisted in the setup of course space on the Brightspace platform for professors. Responsible for writing captions for video lectures for hearing-impaired viewers. Watched lectures made decisions to determine which captions will be included, edited, or left out.

Evaluated assignments and tests. Developed teaching materials for the courses. Assisted students with course material during office hours and answered emails from students to ensure proper understanding of the course material. Served as the administrator for the course discussion thread online and update the online course page with current due dates, assignments, and class hours to make sure everyone has access to updated information.

Performed literature reviews on effective literacy teaching strategies and educator leadership. Improved the quality of the in-school surveys, by ensuring accuracy and applicability. Created new templates for existing surveys to be sent to partner schools.

Assisted members with the use and setup of gym equipment. Greet and check in all Fitness Center members. Monitored all activities within the Fitness Centre to ensure all rules and regulations were being followed. Provided daily care and cleaning of all equipment. Communicated regularly with the management of the Fitness Center and provided additional assistance when requested.

Planned and implemented a variety of daily recreational and enrichment activities that aligned with monthly themes for groups; continually interfacing with members, volunteers, staff, and parents. Lead and supervised small and large groups by recognizing potential issues and applying established procedures and problem solving methods as needed.

Performed literature reviews on the best practices in food literacy and pantry programs in Canada. Assisted in the creation of a resource database for educators using Trello. Transcribed stakeholders’interviews to ensure the partners have their insights into the programming of Uplift.

Conducted qualitative research and summarized findings. Prepared interview questions and summarized survey results. Facilitated and moderated focus groups. Evaluated the Kinesiology program andrecommended improvements based upon the results from the survey and focus groups.

Assisted athletes with injury management, including: first aid care, taping, stretching, massage, heat/coldapplication. Maintained open communication with assigned team’s Coaching Staff, Athletes, and Athletic Trainer Coordinators. Refined tools/skills for basic injury management from Dalhousie Physiotherapy Clinic Therapists and guest lecturers during mandatory educational sessions (taping, massage, stretching, injury classification, Dalhousie Sport Concussion Protocol, on field assessment, etc.).
