I am a U.S. Navy veteran, military spouse, mother of three, and non-traditional student attending Old Dominion University majoring in therapeutic recreation.I unknowingly began my career working with individuals with disabilities when I was in pre-school. I was a peer model to them and always came home excited to tell my parents about my day and how I had helped someone. Later on, I worked direct care for three young women with intellectual disabilities, where I also had the honor of coaching a Special Olympic Basketball and Track team. As with many young adults, I set sail towards a new opportunity and joined the United States Navy; I wanted to travel the world while I could.Fast forward several years, I was married, all of my kids were in school so it was time I got back into the workforce. Remembering how rewarding it was to work in direct care and with individuals with disabilities, I became a direct support professional at a day support program. I loved it, but I wanted to be able to provide them with more.Then, the pandemic happened. That is when I decided to go back to school, and where I found recreational therapy.  My long-term goal after graduation and becoming a certified therapeutic recreational specialist is to either work with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities or at a VA Medical Center, as those are the two populations that have my heart.
