My Great Grandfather and his brother decided to spread their wings and emigrated from Norway to Canada in 1912 as it was the "land of opportunity". They boarded a ship in Oslo bound for England. They had tickets to cross the Atlantic on the Titanic. As it turned out, ice and poor weather caused delays and the Titanic had already set sail by the time they arrived. They were given passage on the much older S.S. Lake Manitoba along with $7.80, the difference in the fare between the ships. They had been at sea for a few days when they heard about the fate of the Titanic. When my great uncle would tell the story to his family he always said that he got $7.80 and his life back that day.I too have followed my own opportunity, moving from Canada to the UAE recently.
