“To know one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” I first read that line of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s quote on a card that was gifted to me at my high school graduation. It resonated with me long before I knew it would actually become my life’s goal. I am a 20 year career nurse with 8 years and counting as a nurse practitioner. My first love is oncology nursing. Although novel treatments still never cease to amaze me, cancer is still the second leading cause of death. There is still so much suffering that affects the patient, their loved ones, and the medical professionals. Palliative care was a natural career transition and I believe that integration of both specialties results in the highest quality care for cancer patients. My philosophy is always to hope for the best but plan for the rest because death is the final, major life event that is guaranteed for all of us at some point in time. If I can help someone breathe a little easier as they are navigating life with serious illness and potentially the end of their life, I know that I have succeeded.
