Veterans Portrait Project "VPP": Black-and-white photos of WWII, Korean, Vietnam, OEF and OIF veterans make up just a portion of Stacy Pearsall's Veterans Portrait Project. Some of the subjects are smiling, and others are gazing at a distant point, but in each, an unseen light catches the emotion in their eyes. Stacy, a veteran of more recent wars, captures the veteran's character and the experience etched in their faces while listening to their recollections of war and their time in service.Stacy began the Veterans Portrait Project in Charleston, SC, while recovering from her own combat injuries. While she sat for hours in waiting rooms, she couldn't help but to notice the men and women around her. She reached out to hear the stories of veterans from every branch of service, generation and conflict and felt inspired to bring her camera and take their portraits, leading to the project that now fills the walls of a number of VA Hospitals across the United States. Today, Stacy continues her project and has photographed veterans from coast to coast. What started as Stacy's path to recovery and healing has now grown into her personal mission to honor and thank her brothers and sisters for their service in the best way she knows how, photography.

Given my first-hand experience in the battle space as a former combat photographer, I provide a unique understanding of military operations and bring my knowledge to bear at each photo shoot. When possible, I use active duty, Guard, Reserve and military veterans as my models. Our combined experiences, and real-world know-how, provide a finished product that’s the real-deal with polished finesse.As an author, I have two published books, Shooter: Combat from Behind the Camera and A Photojournalist's Field Guide: In the Trenches with Combat Photographer Stacy Pearsall. Presently I’m authoring a comprehensive book that embodies the portraits and stories of America’s incredible military veteran community. I teach worldwide for some of the largest conventions and events such as CES, Photoshop World, NAB, Creative Live, Photo Plus, Maui Photo Festival, Shooting the West, Look 3 Festival of the Photograph and Eddie Adams Workshop where I’ve had the honor of serving as a Team Leader.

A selection of her portraits of female veterans, "Veterans Portrait Project," opened this weekend at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. The portraits live on a website that is constantly being updated (Pearsall plans to eventually visit all 50 states). Around nine in 10 are of men, reflecting the disproportionate portion of men in the military. But the 21 portraits on display at the Women's Memorial are of women, whose service range from the 1960s to the present.

Since September 11, 2001, the United States has been engaged in multiple wars, varying in intensity, locale, and consequence. After fifteen years, this warfare has become normalized into our social and cultural landscape; it is ongoing, yet somehow out of sight, invisible.The Face of Battle: Americans at War, 9/11 to Now explores and assesses the human costs of ongoing wars through portraiture. The exhibition title is drawn from John Keegan’s classic military history, which reorients our view of war from questions of strategy and tactics to its personal and individual toll. Featuring fifty-six works by six artists, the exhibition includes photographs by Ashley Gilbertson, Tim Hetherington, Louie Palu, and Stacy Pearsall; site-specific installation of drawings by Emily Prince; and paintings, sculpture, and time-based media by Vincent Valdez.With this poignant exhibition, the National Portrait Gallery will put a face on recent wars through the work of artists who have pictured the experience of common soldiers. The Face of Battle will also bring to public attention the latest formal developments in the field of portraiture as practiced by a diverse and talented group of artists. The exhibition will place the focus on the identity and experiences of ordinary soldiers who fought and continue to fight for our nation.

At the Center, I manage a staff of 12 teachers, write curriculum, produce workshops, handle public relations and much more. We have over 50 permanent members and 150 students a semester.

As a photojournalist assigned to the 1st Combat Camera Squadron, I traveled the globe documenting military combat operations, humanitarian relief efforts and joint exercises.

Aerial Combat Photographers have training in visual reporting, photography and aerial qualifications. They are globally deployed to document major news, as well as within the military for mission-related purposes.
