About Stacy Brown-Philpot

I am inspired by the opportunity to impact people’s lives every day all over the world, which is why as a leader, I believe my purpose is to make it easier for others to achieve their goals. This often means practicing discernment and flexibility in the face of challenges. From my experience managing global operations at Google and TaskRabbit, I know what it takes to execute at scale, and I’m not afraid to take calculated risks. However, I also know that things don’t always go the way we expect them to, and you’ve got to have a plan if things don’t work out. But most importantly, you’ve got to have the courage to stick to the plan when things get tough and trust your team to follow through. Due to the events of 2020, nothing is going according to plan, and we are having to reimagine so much of our world, especially the way we work. As a leader, I’m inspired by the opportunity for us to grow and to rethink it to be more inclusive, productive, and impactful. I know if I continue to do good work and follow my heart in a way that allows me to accomplish more, it will pay off. I am passionate about creating diverse and inclusive opportunities, especially in the black community, which is why I am on the investment committee of SoftBank’s Opportunity Fund and a board member for Black Girls CODE. I also stay involved in the tech and consumer industries through my role as board director for Nordstrom and HP. It was an honor to be named a 2016 Henry Crown Fellow with the Aspen Institute, and Fortune's 2015 40 Under 40 and I will continue to use the visibility as motivation to tackle some of the greatest challenges of our time, for my family, my community and the world.

Jun 2020 - Jun 2023

Ceo

San Francisco, Ca, Us

As CEO, I learned how to connect my personal passions with the mission of the company, and that alignment allowed me to be my authentic self. I loved leading the company through global expansion and the acquisition by IKEA and am proud of the amazing leadership team we built along the way. After the sale, we went from 2% of our business through the IKEA channel to 25%, and our growth allowed us to launch in four new countries in the span of 18 months. The thing that defined the success of the partnership wasn’t necessarily the additional revenue IKEA saw as a result of the program; it was the astronomical increase in Net Promoter Score when customers coupled their IKEA purchase with TaskRabbit assembly. Entering year three post-acquisition, I felt I’d fulfilled my mission. I helped the company create the right leadership structure to go on without me, and officially transitioned out in August of 2020.

Apr 2016 - Aug 2020

Coo

San Francisco, Ca, Us

I started at TaskRabbit in 2013 when they were a group of 64 people keen on changing the world but were lacking the process and strategy to help them do it. The Founder, Leah Busque, brought me in as COO to develop the strategy behind the vision, build the operations, team and product, and then scale the business. I loved working with Leah as a thought partner to develop strategy and communicate with the board. I learned how to engage with a board of directors and also joined my first board (HP), which ultimately made me better prepared to be CEO.At the time, TaskRabbit was operating in eight US cities, and the product wasn’t scaling. I knew we needed to reimagine the product and manage our spending until we could find a way to deliver a reliable product. With the new version we launched in the UK, our fulfillment rate rose to 86%. We were acquiring new customers, and their tasks were getting done profitably. Internally, I worked to create a better infrastructure for hiring and performance reviews, and soon we were hiring and retaining the right people to help us grow. I loved designing and implementing new processes that helped the company scale.

Jan 2013 - Apr 2016

Henry Crown Fellow Class Of 2016

Washington, District Of Columbia, Us

The Henry Crown Fellowship Program, established in 1997, seeks to develop the next generation of entrepreneurial leaders, providing them with the tools necessary to meet the challenges of business leadership in the 21st century. I had the privilege of joining the class of 2016 for a challenging and inspiring two-year program to expand our impact in our communities and the world. The culmination was TaskRabbit for Good as my venture project, resulting in over 30 community partners supported, 18,000 bags of goods donated, and 740 volunteer hours from TaskRabbit employees.

Aug 2016 - Aug 2018

Entrepreneur-In-Residence

Gv

San Francisco Bay Area, Ca , Us

Bill Maris was launching the fund and wanted select executives from Google to advise and support their portfolio companies.

May 2012 - Dec 2012

Sr Director Of Global Consumer Operations

Mountain View, Ca, Us

With the help of a global team of 300+ people across 7 sites, I managed all operations for Google's consumer products, including online sales and customer support. We were responsible for a portfolio of more than 50 products ranging from mature products like Google Search to emerging products like Google eBooks. I learned how to work cross-functionally in a very large organization (over 40K people) and advocate for resources for my team. I loved building product and analytics teams and integrating them more directly with engineering at Google. As a result, we developed an operational support strategy for new product launches that scaled with users and revenue and designed new ideas for increasing user engagement with Google’s consumer products.

Sep 2010 - May 2012

Sr Director, Online Sales & Operations India

Mountain View, Ca, Us

I loved living in another country and having responsibility for multiple functions as a general manager. I was in the business of figuring out how to inspire people, fix broken processes, and make sure that my team was productive, effective and enjoying themselves at work. It was both incredibly challenging and rewarding to rebuild the leadership team to one that was high performing and aligned with global goals. As a Sr. Director, I learned how to set a vision and a strategy for the team that aligned with the overall company and relevant for our local operation. I also learned to adapt my leadership style to meet the cultural and motivational needs of my team. As a result, we re-earned our standing as the number one company to work for in India.

Jul 2009 - Sep 2010

Director, Consumer & Enterprise Operations

Mountain View, Ca, Us

This team was responsible for supporting users across all of Google’s free products, which at that time included Gmail, Chrome, Google Maps, and Search. When Google launched a new product, we were responsible for ensuring a support team was available. I discovered that I love launching new products that consumers use every day.I spent a lot of time with Product to help them understand our customers’ feedback and how to integrate their needs into upcoming releases. We had to decide what types of support we would provide and how to create a support structure that scaled globally. During my tenure, one highlight was working hand in hand with the product team to launch Google Chrome, which was lauded as one of Google’s most successful products.

Nov 2007 - Jul 2009

Director, Sales Finance

Mountain View, Ca, Us

When I joined in 2003, Google was generating hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue but tracking everything in spreadsheets. The first thing I quickly did was to create forecasts and budgets and measure the teams’ performance against their targets. At the end of my first three years at Google, we had built a global finance organization that supported a 3,700 person online sales and operations team. There was so much to do that there was never a shortage of new projects to work on outside of my core job of managing the finance team. I enjoyed designing HR processes, including creating the performance review process end-to-end, through manager training and execution. I also supported the Product team to create payment infrastructure for the AdSense product. Most of all, I loved working closely with Sheryl Sandberg as she was building out her operations team. It was due in large part to her encouragement that I started the Black Googler Network.

Sep 2003 - Nov 2007

Business Development Manager

Us

As a business development manager, my job was to sell the product through IBM channel partners, where I built and managed relationships with our largest strategic partners. I loved working at a tech company and learned how to pitch technical products to clients. At Wily, I expanded my experience beyond services and worked with an incredible team, many of whom I’m still in touch with today.

Apr 2003 - Sep 2003

Sap Ventures: Summer Associate

Sap

Walldorf, Bw, De

On one project, I worked closely with the CEO and product management team of BuildPoint, an eProcurement software application for the construction industry, and presented our recommendations for product positioning and functionality analysis to their board. Working on this project inspired me to pursue a career in Operations.

Jun 2001 - Sep 2001

Senior Analyst

New York, New York, Us

In this role, I constructed financial models for strategic transactions and found that I loved doing deals. The exhilaration of working on a live transaction is what got me through the long hours. I had the opportunity to learn how to use Excel very well, a skill that has come in handy throughout my career. I also learned how to be extremely efficient with my time and allocate all the resources available to me, which laid the foundation for my future in Operations.

Jul 1999 - Jul 2000
