Dr. Davis is a physician leader with broad leadership team experience and specialized skills in communication, teamwork and simulation. A board-certified obstetrician with over 20 years of clinical experience, he has lectured nationally and internationally, with a variety of institutions including the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), (ICSI), risk management groups, and the Department of Defense (DOD) among others. Dr. Davis was a Co-Principal Investigator for an Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) $3 million demonstration grant “Medical Liability Reform and Patient Safety” from 2010-2013. The project implemented and evaluated the use of perinatal best practices to reduce harm to patients and to reduce malpractice claims, dropped claims and reduced payouts. This included in situ simulation, perinatal bundles and TeamSTEPPS (AHRQ’s curriculum for communication and teamwork) training in 16 hospitals across the country focusing on standardization and high reliability. He has helped develop curriculum material for the Research Triangle Institute (RTI) and the American Academy of Family Physicians.He has published on TeamSTEPPS and in situ simulation in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Davis has worked with over 100 public, private and military hospitals evaluating quality processes, utilizing simulation and TeamSTEPPS. In 2011, DOD issued its “Distinguished Service Award” recognizing him for his contribution to TeamSTEPPS education. He is a Master Trainer in TeamSTEPPS and was an original faculty member for the National Implementation of TeamSTEPPS in 2007. He co-developed and led the “Zero Birth Injury (ZBI)” project at Fairview Health Services that has been recognized by the March of Dimes as a model for other institutions to reduce birth injury. Part of this work involved a horizontal integration of 6 hospitals in standardizing policies and protocols in the interest of patient safety and increasing reliability in care.In 2014, Dr. Davis consulted and helped develop for the United States Navy their “Safe Surgery Trainer”. This gaming platform was built for DOD to use in teaching military medical staff human factors and important communication techniques. This work was performed through Alion Science and is the Navy’s first patient safety training-game for perioperative teams.Dr. Davis co-developed and implemented an in situ simulation program at Fairview Health Services in Minneapolis, MN that has been acknowledged as a “Top Ten” idea by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) at its National Conference in 2006.
