Staff Writer

Current

I currently cover the police beat at the Eagle and am also the primary weather reporter. I have a weather blog called "Finger on the Weather" that has readers from around the country and even overseas. My first priority is posting stories about breaking news onto the Eagle's web site, but I also look to write in-depth pieces for the print edition. I am also shooting videos for our web site as news and story opportunities dictate.I have covered Business, City Hall, County Government, stories around the state and general assignment pieces during my time at the Eagle. I have been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize twice - once in feature writing for a series of stories following a family-owned cattle ranch through a grazing season in the Flint Hills and again as part of team coverage of the re-emergence of the serial killer BTK.A serial narrative in 2001 about the impact of a son's suicide on his family years after he was molested by a Catholic priest earned the Eagle's "Story of the Year." My stories in 2000 about the pattern of abuse over more than 30 years by that priest, Robert Larson, led to changes implemented by the Catholic Diocese of Wichita. The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) has told me the Larson case is the only one in the country where newspaper articles prompted a criminal investigation, charges and the conviction of a priest.
