About Stan Olson
I've always learned by doing. You can read books, take courses and get all the certifications you want. The real learning begins by trial and error. Growing up, I was immersed in various technologies. Whether it was exploring a computer with a green monochrome screen that my dad had built or listening to voices from around the world through a ham radio, tech has always been my jam. For the past twelve years, I have worked for the News-Gazette in Champaign, IL. I provide technical support via email, phone and in-person for a newspaper (News-Gazette), three radio stations (WDWS, WHMS, WKIO) and several magazines. I also maintain the servers for the company.In 2019, the newspaper filed for bankruptcy. The new company hired many folks to stay on while others were let go. Thankfully, I was retained and became the sole I.T. person. I'm proud of my accomplishments at the newspaper. Here are a few of them:-Using spare servers and open-source software (Nagios, LibreNMS and Graylog), I built a network monitoring system for the company. Most of the time I know when things are down and can usually fix them before the users notice.-Created time and temperature displays using Raspberry Pi computers, spare monitors and open-source software for our radio stations. These displays are mounted on the wall and are quickly recognized when you walk into the studio. -Facilitated moving our office two times in two years during COVID. This included setting up server racks, installing servers, getting everything connected to the network and toning out network ports all while trying to keep the business operational. -Named employee of the year in 2017 and 2021.
