Stan Wellborn is a long-time Washington, D.C., journalist and public affairs executive at leading nonprofit foundations and public policy institutions.For nearly two decades, Wellborn was a Washington reporter and editor. He began his career at Congressional Quarterly in 1969 and in 1972 joined U.S. News & World Report, where he worked for 15 years as an associate and senior editor. He was the recipient of the 1986 Space Pioneer Award from the National Space Society for his coverage of the Challenger shuttle disaster.In 1987, Wellborn became Director of the Office of Public Affairs at the Brookings Institution, a prominent nonpartisan public policy think tank in Washington.In 1997, Wellborn was named Director of External Affairs at the Annie E. Casey Foundation in Baltimore, the nation’s largest philanthropy focused on the needs of disadvantaged children and families. At Casey, he managed communications, media relations, and policy advocacy activities; oversaw production of all foundation publications; supervised the Casey website and Intranet; and directed grantee relations activities. He also served on the Casey Foundation’s Senior Executive Management Committee.From 2004 to 2010, Wellborn was Director of Communications and Public Affairs at Resources for the Future (RFF), the nation’s first think tank devoted exclusively to independent and nonpartisan research on energy, natural resource, and environmental issues.He has been a consultant to a number of major nonprofit organizations, including the Ford, Rockefeller, Kauffman, Robert Wood Johnson, and Fannie Mae Foundations. He has served on the boards of the American Association of Woodturners; DC Greenworks, a Washington, DC, environmental advocacy group; and the American Youth Work Center, publisher of Youth Today.Wellborn is a recipient of the Washburn University Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Award, and was inducted into the Topeka High School Hall of Fame. He was a Peace Corps volunteer in Ghana. He and his wife Elder are the parents of three grown children. He is a licensed referee for the US Rowing Association.
