With 2023 behind us, I wish to provide a brief update on my plans for the upcoming year. (I realize it is presumptuous to think anyone should care!) Ha!I retired in October as the North American Technical Director for the ICAPE Group. I am focusing my energy on new endeavors with ½ of my time with DIVSYS AEROSPACE (The ITAR company that I own) and the rest doing consulting where I can leverage my 50 years of living and learning about electronic manufacturing.I began my career in electronics perhaps earlier than most. I started a small electronic repair business when I was in the 7th grade and operated that until I graduated from high school. No employees, of course, and I knew nothing about finance (no taxes either), but I did learn how to make customers happy. If you are good at what you do, people will find you. If you keep a smile on your face and deliver what you promise, they will come back and tell others. I have maintained this business philosophy of coupling excellence with making customers happy for my entire career. I needed PCBs in graduate school (circa 1971) and figured out how to make them using homemade equipment. I combined making simple PCBs with the design knowledge of an EE to start diversifiedsystems in 1973. I have been involved with electronic design, Fabricating PCBs and Assembling them since that time (50 years!). I find all of this experience necessary in the consulting that I do.I struggle with the designation of being a consultant (I think of myself as an engineer).I have a frustration with people that earn their living as consultants because some look to maximize the “time-on-project” (billable hours) instead of solving the problem in the most efficient way. This loss of objectivity taints the entire community. What I hope to do when I consult is to transfer knowledge that I have acquired over my career such that the customer’s engineers get value beyond just fixing a problem. I often lament the challenge young EE’s face because they do not have the benefits that I enjoyed by being immersed in a project from Design through Assembly. I find this advantage particularly true when the problem is an interaction between the PCB and the Assembly process (such as small thru-hole caps with one lead in a solder mask defined pad) I hope to help fill that knowledge gap with upcoming webinars on this process. My best wishes to all for a happy and prosperous 2024. StanB

OwnerDiversified Systems Inc Oct 1973 - May 2010Indianapolis, Indiana AreaDSI was a start-up company and a "moonlight" venture until 1980 when I left my full time job and devoted all my time to the new company. I became full-time employee number 11. DSI grew rapidly over the next 30 years and was a three time member of the INC 500 Magazine list of fastest growing private companies. In 1986 an additional honor was added by becoming the Indiana Small Business man of the year. DSI was a vertical integrated model employing Design, PCB Fabrication, and Assembly. At its peak, DSI employed 500 people in a 225,000 Sq ft plant sitting on 25 beautiful acres. The company had a wellness center with a Nurse, a fitness center, and a 126 child day care with Kindergarten. The company prided itself on the value it placed on its employees and had a full time learning center that taught over 30 different classes, including the certification classes for taking the Lean Six Sigma Black Belt exam and CPIM. DSI initiated a formal affirmative action program in 1982 and, at the time of its closure, was 60% female employment with 55% professional (exempt) employees.DSI was caught in the fall out from the crash of the financial markets and its lender in 2009. I am precluded from disclosing most of the details, but can say that at the time of these events, dsi was healthy and profitable. Over the next 15 months, a Litany of consultants, confidants, sharks, and other professions and entities that I will defer to disclose, bled the company of its resources and forced its closure in May of 2010. I will confide that I was so focused on protecting customers and employees that I allowed these predators to operate with relative impunity. It is a sad commentary that those most professing their sincerity are those most evil in their intentions. All had a playbook that one day I hope to share. I believe this would be a best seller. It was a great run, and my only regret is for the 370 families that were impacted by the closure.

Chief EngineerRansburg Corporation 1972 - 1980IndianapolisRansburg was the job of a lifetime for a kid out of South Eastern Kentucky. I was recruited out of grad school by Harold Ransburg (Founder), who invented the electrostatic coating process. If you are not familiar with electrostatic coating, suffice it to say that everything you touch that has paint or powder coat is done electrostatically. The problem in 1972 was that the systems were not safe enough due to the use of 100 KV voltages in an atmosphere of atomized solvent. One spark, and “Poof”! My assignment was to bring the equipment into the modern world and make them safe. If this could be accomplished, the economic rewards would be phenomenal. The newly created Environmental Protection Agency was taking aim on anyone that used paint. The auto industry was a major target due to their huge volumes. In round numbers, the amount of paint on a sedan was about 1 gallon. With hand spray systems, it took about 4 gallons to accomplish the task. The 3 gallons of overspray were now an environmental disaster. Electrostatic systems could easily deliver efficiencies of over 90%. In fact, one early test system at Ford Motor Company delivered over 97% under full production (Ford’s results). Ransburg was cash rich and I was given a free reign to spend anything needed to allow us to capture this market. The first “Crowbar” patent (mine) was disclosed in early 1973 and became the basis for many later works all leveraging a safety technology. Ransburg began installing systems at Ford and GM in late 1973. Sales went from about $25MM to over $160MM in less than 5 years. Being the Chief engineer during this wild period built the foundation for all of my engineering accomplishments for the next 40 years. Having unlimited resources and being surrounded by incredibly talented and motivated people is something few engineers ever experience. And, that is sad, but I am eternally grateful for the opportunity.
