Gas Analysis: Gas samples of different gas streams from the plant are analyzed for gaseous impurities and also for the purity level of feed gases e.g. ethylene, propylene and butene-1 samples. Analysis is also done on natural gas liquid and fuel gas. These analyses are carried out by gas chromatography using the following detectors: Thermal Conductivity Detector, Flame Ionization Detector and Flame Photometric Detector. Impurities such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, hydrogen sulphide and carbonyl sulphide are also detected by gas chromatography. Some impurities such as ammonia in ethylene are detected by titration. Moisture is determined for gas samples using a dew-point meter. GC models used so far are: PERKIN ELMER (Autosystem Gas Chromatograph), SHIMADZU -14B,17B with the following integrators, C-R5A, C-R7Ae plus, C-R8A CHROMATOPAC, and AGILENT TECHNOLOGIES 7890A (GC System). Water & Oil Analysis: Water from Boiler drums and Boiler steam samples are analyzed for o-PO43-, SiO2,Cl- and metallic radicals such asFe3+, Zn2+, Na2+,Cadmium and Chromate ions using uv-visible spectrophotometer and Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer respectively. Density, pour and cloud point, viscosity and flash point of oil samples are also analyzed. The copper corrosion, vapor pressure, moisture and distillation range are also deterermined for liquid hydrocarbons. It must be mentioned that most of the lab instruments are constantly calibrated as per frequency of use, to monitor equipment performance and to check good reproducibility and repeatability of results. The gas chromatographs are calibrated with gas standards and system checks are done weekly or monthly depending on the extent of use.Awareness of IMS (integrated management system) which is fully initiated and on going at IEPL with certification in ISO 9001 etc. Full participation in the award of The Sword of Honour to IEPL by the British Safety Council (BSC) in 2012.
