  • The Edtech Fund
    Managing Partner
The Edtech Fund May 2013 - Jan 2017
The EdTech Fund invests in seed stage education technology companies. The Tsunami of change in education has started to crest. The titans of education are falling. The large educational book publishers are struggling to redefine themselves as schools increase their purchases of digital products, and traditional universities are rethinking the pure bricks and mortar model as the ROI on a college education turns negative. The personalized learning environments we've been dreaming of for over a decade are quickly becoming a reality.Smart venture capitalists know these changes are happening, and they are pouring money into education technology. The portion of school budgets dedicated to digital products will continue to grow, and those dollars will make more of these start-ups successful. This is one of those points in time that we will look back upon and say to ourselves, "If only I had invested in education technology..."But the real opportunity in Ed Tech is at the Seed stage. VCs got burned during the last financial crisis. They are gun shy and not investing in anything that doesn't yet have meaningful revenue. The result is that valuations at the typical "Series A" level are inflated, putting pressure on potential returns. Moving back to the Seed or angel stage in the investment cycle involves risk, but there is also an opportunity. Most angel investors are very generalist. They "focus" on areas like social and mobile. Everything is social and mobile! Though the education sector might seem easy to understand since we all went to school, it's actually very complex and nuanced due to the amount of regulation involved. The Ed Tech Fund brings together experts from across the field of education--school technology coordinators, publishing industry leaders, policy experts, teachers, experienced investors, and technology developers. Our experience and expertise enables us to choose the right investments and reduce the risk.
