About Stanley Russell
My love of travel and interest in housing and community design led me to Ahmedabad India to work in the office of Pritzker prize winning architect Balkrishna Doshi where I was exposed to the design of entire sectors of cities to accommodate tens of thousands. From India I went to Japan to work for Team Zoo, a firm well know for collaborations with local community groups and craftspeople. It was through the contacts I developed with Team zoo that I was able to start an apprenticeship with a master carpenter on Awaji Island in western Japan. With the skills I developed I started a design/build company “Teuchi Kenchiku” and designed and built several houses using traditional Japanese building materials and construction techniques. I returned to the US to teach design and Japanese architecture at Miami University in Ohio and the University of South Florida where I am currently an associate professor. At USF I led a design/build program and together with groups of students designed and built several award winning projects in the Tampa area. Our last project, the most ambitious, was a house for the 2011 Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. My company “One Corner Architects “ won the AIA Tampa Bay H. Dean Rowe, FAIA Award for Design Excellence in 2019 with the Classic Car Showroom. I lead annual Architectural study trips for USF students to Japan. Since 2022 I have taught the spring/summer semester in the School of Architecture at Kanazawa University in Yokohama Japan.
