    President
Summit View Development Corp. Mar 2010 - Present
Since 2010, Summit View Development Corp., operating under the name of Easy SR&ED Consultants has been offering management consulting services to client companies engaged in R&D with their applications for Government benefits / tax credits under the SR&ED (Scientific Research and Experimental Development) Program. In 2020, the company has initiated its own research project to develop an advanced algae cultivation platform along with related technologies. The company looks to commercialize algae biomass and related products for plant based protein through Rainforest Algae Corp.A corporate objective is to reduce production costs of algae spirulina cultivation to be able to compete with other protein sources in Canada targeting $20/kg dry protein by 2025 in quantities of Tonnes/yr.
  • Rainforest Algae Corp.
    President
Rainforest Algae Corp. Apr 2019 - Present
The cultivation of algae provides compelling answers for 4 major global challenges: GHG emission mitigation (clean air), re-mediating waste water streams (clean water), renewable energy (transportation fuels including diesel, gasoline, hydrogen, diluent, aviation / jet fuels, etc), and food, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals....... and so much more, including fertilizers. The emerging algae industry has the potential to eclipse the oil and gas industry as we know it. It is not IF the algae industry will become a dominant industry segment.... it is a matter of how quickly it comes into being.Photobioreactor technologies are set to lead the way to reducing the cost of algae biomass, not unlike the paradigm shift in renewable energy sources like PV which are now, already competing with conventional fossil fuel energy.Involved in ongoing research to develop advanced photobioreactor systems for the cultivation of microalgae, development of analytical models to predict / simulate / optimize algae cultivation yields, techno-economic models, life cycle assessment models, leverage data science, AI / machine learning to enhance algae production yields.

  • University Of Calgary, Department Of Geoscience
Postdoctoral Researcher - Algae For Protein
University Of Calgary, Department Of Geoscience Apr 2020 - Apr 2023
Microalgae are considered to hold tremendous potential to become a leading source for protein production. Algae biomass can have a composition that includes more than 50% proteins. As the fastest growing plant, algae can more than double its mass in a 24-hour period. The global annual demand for protein is currently approximately 200 million tonnes and is expected to grow from USD $8 B ($40/T) in 2019 to $15 B by 2023.Given the colder, northern climate found in Canada there is a need to cultivate the algae in enclosed and tightly controlled environmental conditions with a technology known as a photobioreactors (PBR) that can produce optimized growing conditions for the algae. Research is required to advance PBR technology designs and operating protocols that will enable the cultivation of algae at a much lower cost. Emphasis in the current research project will be to investigate how making changes to PBR designs and operating protocols will enable the increase of cultivation cell densities and productivity yields of both Spirulina and Chlorella algae species, both of which are known to have high protein composition. As high yields are achieved the investigation will continue to determine if these yields remain attainable while increasing the scale of production starting at 5 L and continuing through to PBR designs up to 10 m3.Of particular interest is the investigation of the impact of dissolved O2 concentration on the elliptical nature of photosynthetic activity. Experiments will be conducted to investigate the impact of changes to system parameters including nutrient concentrations, light frequency and intensities, maintenance of pH and electrical conductivity on algae biomass production yields.
  • University Of Alberta
Phd Mechanical Engineering / Environmental Science
University Of Alberta Sep 2013 - Apr 2019
    Edmonton, Ab, Ca
The research topic is to look at algae biomass and its suitability for processing leading through to the production of hydrogen and diluent for Alberta oil sands applications. The focus of studies has been concentrated around the initial steps including the cultivation of algae giving consideration to the utilization of a variety of technologies and pathways that will deliver algae biomass for upstream processes. The studies involved the creation of a forecasting model tool that will predict production of algae depending on technologies and cultivation protocols that are adopted. These outcomes were integrated to forecast LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) environmental and techno-economic impacts associated with these operational decisions, both to the delivery of the algae biomass and on through to the production of hydrogen and diluent..

  • Symbiotic Envirotek Inc
Vice President - Energy & Environment
Symbiotic Envirotek Inc Jan 2012 - Sep 2013
Symbiotic has developed an advanced proprietary photobioreator technology for the cultivation of algae. The system monetizes waste streams including CO2, waste water, waste heat and excess electricity. This is a scale-able, commercially sustainable design enabling the production of micro-algae at rates in excess of 4 gm / liter per day and is readily co-located near waste streams around the globe, even in adverse climatic regions. The platform can be used for the production of renewable fuels including renewable diesel, nutraceuticals including omega 3, DHA, food supplements, anti-oxidants, fertilizers while at the same time mitigating Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. This is an amazing win:win:win story. The commercial scale photobioreactor holds 106,000 liters and is capable of taking down in excess of a ton of CO2 daily.

    Atco Energy Sense 2003 - 2006
Conducted energy evaluations in 2000+ homes across Alberta under the Federal Government's EcoEnergy Program, offering homeowners recommendations for increasing the energy efficiency of their homes. Rule # 1. Building energy efficiency starts with a sealed envelop where air is kept from infiltrating and / or escaping from within.Rule #2. Insulate, insulate, insulate. The more insulation the more heat you keep in your home or maintain a cooler home in the summer.Rule #3. Use the highest energy efficiency appliances throughout the home which prevents unnecessary loss / use of energy. This would include heating systems (space and domestic hot water), washers, dryers, fridges, deep freezers, stoves, lights (LEDs), (AC) air conditioning, etc.Rule #4. Similar to Rule #2. Install the most energy efficient window systems. Go to triple glaze with inert gas between panes, multiple and carefully installed weather stripping around windows that open, insulated extrusion framing members. The added price for these windows will pay for themselves in the future... and help to maintain a more comfortable / quieter home.Rule # 5. Consider installing an HRV (heat recovery ventilation) into your space heating system. Every home needs fresh air. Instead of bringing raw air from outside into your home, send it through an HRV to exchange heat with air being expelled while you bring in the fresh air.Rule # 6. Keep up with maintenance... including replacing air filters in your heating / cooling system.OPTIONS:Consider installing geothermal coupled with heat pumps as a highly efficient source for heating / cooling within your home.Consider installing solar thermal and solar photo voltaic panels as sources of renewable energy.**See real time solar thermal research project on my home utilizing both evacuated tubes and flat panels.www.welserver.com/wel0190
