My expertise covers all aspects of being a senior geoscientist within a major oil and gas company. Oil sands geology has been a focus, and I have worked both Insitu and mine properties. As a strong proponent of the use of new science, I have also stewarded ideas, through patenting, to application, resulting in new datasets, cost savings and production uplifts. This work I have often published or presented at industry conferences in North America. As a geoscientist, I have a demonstrated skillset which includes exploring for hydrocarbons, developing known reserves and handling multiple properties through their production life cycle. I have worked carbonate and clastic oil and gas properties, oil sands developments and within multi discipline research teams.Specialties include: SAGD, CSS, Nsolv, ESEIEH, InSAR, Infill drilling, Pad development, AER regulatory compliance, horizontal well drilling, production well optimisation, Mine geology, Palynology, Bacterial stratigraphy, Hyperspectral imaging, XRF, Palynofacies, Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, Ichnology, Accumap, Petrel, Mentoring, Teaching, Field trips.

Chief Operations OfficerUrsa Cleantech Ltd. Feb 2024 - PresentURSA Cleantech is a start up company leveraging the founders experience in oil and gas industries, microbe applications and innovation. Activites include research into reducing GHG emissions from wells, locating casing leaks and tracking hydrocarbon pollution via microbiome changes . Other applications include the optimisation of hydrogen storage in salt caverns and the reduction of waxes in wellbores. Currently, we are generating additional funding, creating pitch decks and doing educational presentations about microbes to industrial and research organisations. Recent presentations include:Stancliffe, Russell P.W. (Stan), and Gieg, Lisa M., 2024. Microbial alterations of sediments and their stratigraphic uses: examples from the Athabasca oilsands of NE Alberta, Canada. GeoConvention 2024, June 17-19th, Calgary, Alberta.Stan Stancliffe. 2023. So what is in your reservoir? 2023 Emerging Energy Summit, AGAT Laboratories , Nov 1st, Petroleum Club, Calgary, Invited presentation. -
FounderGeor.E.D. Jul 2017 - PresentA geoscience consulting company bringing successful solutions to petroleum geological challenges. Specialties include all aspects of bitumen geology, training and the application of innovative technology. Areas of future interest include the uses of bacteria to resolve production issues and remote sensing of oilfields and how to use the increasing number of data sources. A course on the history of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, tight oil and gas, has been developed and presented, along with a second course on the oilsands history and development with Gord Stabb.Projects include :Recent part time consulting with Skygeo, PetroStrat, and Enersoft helping them with InSAR, palaeontology and digital core descriptions respectively.Working with the G.S.C. to update and digitise the IOL palynology collection in their basement.Mentoring students in the Capstone program at S.A.I.T.Presented courses/workshops/talks with Petromentors, Juvicle and MRU.Assisting the Dept of Biol. Geoscience SpecialistSuncor Energy Aug 2011 - Jun 2017Suncor Energy2015-2017• Geoscience specialist in the Suncor MacKay asset team leading the development of North Arm 3 In Situ Solvent Development Facility. The D23 development application was a product of this work.• Geoscientist for the Nsolv, ESEIEH and EASE solvent production technology teams providing geological datasets, drilling research wells and assisting the development of reservoir models and production forecasts.• Developed the six Township Petrel geological model to be used in creating hydrogeological and fate transfer models of the MacKay/Mildred Lake mine expansion interaction.• Led the geological well review of Phases 4/5 SAGD project at Suncor Mackay.• Drilled research wells and pioneered the use of hyperspectral/XRF imaging to replace lab based analyses of bitumen saturated core. This technology is faster, cheaper and of a significantly higher resolution than standard methodologies.• Mentored junior geologists, geophysists and engineers within the team and across the organisation.2011-2015• Lead geoscientist in the Subsurface Engineering and Geology team creating breakthrough technologies for Suncor.• Suncor lead in research of bacterial interaction with bitumen within the Suncor Firebag property.• Investigated lean zone mobile water in lean and how to input the data collected into a production model and the technologies to be used.• Drilled the Mobile Water V test facility at Firebag to test the connectivity of lean zones and methods to produce this stranded bitumen resource.• Developed and used Lidar to remotely resolve the sedimentary structures, faults/fracture sets and bitumen saturations in a bitumen mineface.
