City Year is an AmeriCorps national service program that engages young adults in a full year of rigorous community development service, personal leadership development and civic engagement. I was placed in an inner-city middle school as an English and Math Tutor to a 7th grade class of 30, a Mentor for eight behavior challenged students, and Team Leader for 12 students in a community service driven after school program. Along with my school service, I designed and coordinated 5 service projects that engaged more than 80 volunteers. As a corps member at Junior High School 13, I had the dual roles of Training coordinator and Math coordinator for my team of 9 in East Harlem. For my role as a trainer, I held four meetings with my team to discuss what we needed to be trained in. I then communicated those needs to a program manager and helped create those trainings. Some of these include Math tutor training, Behavior management training, and a weekend long training session for 250 corps members. As the math coordinator, I designed the math tutoring curriculum for 70 students, and trained my team how to use it.
