I started in the industry in 1982 as an Apprentice Ironworker. During my apprenticeship my father who was for many years the Business Agent for Local #495 decided to start a Steel Erection Company. At the time I was working for the ZIA Company in Los Alamos NM he would not let me quit to come work for him until I broke out. Once I became a Journeyman I went to work for him. Must say for many years I felt like the Red Headed step child. Looking back now I truly appreciate the way he treated me as it gain me respected of the men, although it sucked at the time. I went from Journeyman to Foreman to General Foremen after 12 years he then brought me into the office to learn that side. Him being old school that's how I learned. After a few years I knew we had to come up to the times with the online way of doing things and in 2002 we made that transition.The most Ironworkers we ran was 160 but stayed at 70 Ironworkers steady. We did 8 to 15 Million in annual sales.I truly love the industry and although it was really hard, we decided to sell out March 2012 and move on to other things.Steel Erection Runs in my blood, I do miss it although all you other Steel Erector know that the stress does wear you down and.... it damn sure not as fun as it used to be.
