About Dave Cutting
I have experience with PCB design, from simple 2-layer boards up to 6- and 8- layer HDI boards incorporating basic RF design. I have centered my firmware around C++ firmware development, with extensive experience in driver and application development, cross-compiled unit testing, and HIL testing. I like working with STM32, but have also worked with other ARM controllers. Rust is on my list of things to learn next.

Embedded Engineer Iii
Lead Embedded Engineer
-- Responsible for a multi-disciplinary team of 5 engineers in design, integration, and testing of an autonomous kinetic counter-UAS system (Bullfrog). Reported directly to the CTO. The system was successfully demonstrated at the DoD T-REX event in August 2024.-- Designed, Fabricated, and Tested a custom Field Oriented Controlled (FOC) motor board to drive the robotic turret system. The PCB included an STM32H7 microcontroller with custom firmware.-- Developed communication hardware to precisely time synchronize three separate microcontrollers using differential signaling and CAN-FD fieldbus.-- Developed subsystems requirements document for the Bullfrog passive EO/IR camera system that detects and identifies multiple airborne UAS threats.-- Analysis and design of fire-control safety systems using standard robotics safety components
Lead Embedded Engineer
I joined Inertial Sense as a Test Engineer intern, and learned quickly through mentorship and self-study so I could take a lead role in designing products.-- Designed High Density Interconnect (HDI) printed circuit assemblies incorporating fine-pitch Wafer-level Chip-Scale Packages (WLCSP) for two new flagship products, the IMX-5 and GPX-1. -- Worked on a small team alongside a senior level GNC engineer to optimize algorithms for inertial navigation.-- Worked on initial implementation of multi-frequency L1/L5 RTK (Real-Time Kinematics) on a PC to debug and identify issues with the underlying library, in preparation for implementation on a small STM32 MCU. -- Debugged issues with poor RF connections and poor antenna SNR.-- Designed a new test fixture for manufacturing and testing. Developed procedures to evaluate performance of off-the-shelf 6-axis IMUs for noise and drift figures that directly impact accuracy using an environmental chamber.
Founder
-- Developed a product line of miniature lineside signals with integrated LED lighting effects, mainly composed of 3D printed, etched brass, and PCBs.-- Designed and produced a successful Digital Command Control (DCC) decoder based on an ATTiny MCU that was programmable in the Arduino IDE. It was able to decode commands and light LEDs based on the commands.-- Developed a pogo pin based testing and programming fixture, and produced over 100 copies of the board using a stencil and skillet in my home lab. -- Revived the Cutting Edge Scale Models line of Shapeways products under the Wasatch Scale Models name.
Founder
-- Designed custom 3D model assets and offered them to customers through an online web store plus a 3D printing drop-ship provider (Shapeways)-- Used 3D tools to design etched brass components and developed a process to convert those into 2D assets that could be made by a commercial brass etcher.
