Mar 2006 - Jan 2012Calgary, Canada AreaMobis was established with interest from the Canadian Heavy Oil community to investigate the application of advanced catalysis for deeper conversion of Oilsands bitumen into into fuels. Between 2009 and 2011, in cooperation with the Topchiev Institute of Petrochemical Synthesis, Russian Academy of Sciences, Canadian bitumen was piloted in RAS facilities in Moscow confirming the technical feasibility of a nearly complete bitumen conversion to lighter products. A study of the bitumen value chain was done premised on the idea that application of an advanced nano-catalyst removes technical constraints which currently result in rejection of 13% of each barrel of bitumen as disposal products, such as low value petroleum coke. The economic impact of nearly complete conversion of bitumen into a medium sour crude high in diesel range boiling material was explored showing impacts on emissions intensity, capital investment, by-product reduction and revenue.
