About Stefan Schear
My job is to give students the chance to see how far they can go. Drawing out hidden strengths, finding ways around roadblocks in understanding and language, developing confidence. These are the strengths and joys that have led me to become a special needs educator. The position I held at Discovery Bay International School (DBIS) was centered around learning support and modified lessons for a primary student with Down syndrome. This allowed him to be fully integrated into mainstream classes. I also supported another student with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the same year group, often in smaller pull-out sessions with other students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) . The personality asset I make the most of is my deep wellspring of patience. I've been an amateur writer for years, working on science fiction shorts and novels. Seeing things happen in "geological time" is a large part of writing, and I discovered that it is also a basic quality for a special needs educator: to be able to see the big picture, where every small goal fits into the whole person that you are supporting in their own personal development, and to understand the mountains they are trying to bring down. While working in mainstream schools I have also seen the significant effect that students with SEN had on the rest of the class. I've learned that patience and understanding are highly valuable social skills that you can actually teach. To see how caring and accepting kids can be when they are given the right opportunities is awe-inspiring, and it speaks volumes about how inclusive education benefits society as a whole.Having an SEN team working with classroom teachers also strengthens (or sometimes even creates) collaboration across departments. My current position in secondary SEN illustrates how important this type of network really is for students. The problem of complex, shifting schedules with multiple subjects is, in itself, already a challenge for students with a number of issues related to executive functioning. But when each teacher doesn’t have enough data to get a holistic picture of a student’s challenges and strengths, then some kind of meta-tracking becomes critical. I have watched students make significant strides in their work and happiness, purely because everyone was able to adapt to the students’ strengths and avoid the triggers for negative behavior.I am moving back to Seattle in July, after 11 years in Hong Kong. My hope is that I can join a team that shares my values, and will allow me to continue learning how to be an effective teacher.
