I am Assistant Professor at the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Technical University of Crete in Greece. I serve as European Climate Pact Ambassador apoointed by the European Commission. I am elected President of the International Ecological Engineering Society and elected Regional Coordinator for Africa and Middle East for the ‘Wetlands for Water Pollution Control’ Specialist Group of the International Water Association. Also, Editor-in-Chief of the Springer journal ‘Circular Economy and Sustainability’ and Associate Editor of other journals. I am an Environmental Engineer with MSc and PhD on water and wastewater engineering, specifically on ecological engineering and nature-based solutions. Ι study the transition to a circular economy and ways to reach a sustainable society by developing inter/multi-disciplinary approaches. I am also ivestigating optimum ways to integrate nature-based solutions in a circular water economy.My expertise is in the field of ecological engineering, i.e., the design of sustainable decentralized water and wastewater management systems, namely nature-based solutions such as constructed wetlands. I have designed, managed, and constructed several such wastewater treatment facilities across Europe, Middle East, Africa, USA and South America. In the past, I worked as Wetland Specialist & Tender Manager with Bauer Resources in Oman serving the international group, as Researcher and Lecturer at the University of Brighton in the UK, the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research – UFZ in Germany, the University of Beira Interior in Portugal, and the Democritus University of Thrace in Greece. My publication record includes articles in international peer-review scientific journals, conference proceedings, books and book chapters.I could summarize my interests as follows:- Consultancy services on Constructed Wetlands for domestic/municipal/industrial/agro-industrial wastewater/sludges. - Investigation of pollutant removal processes/transformations, to better understand and optimize the design and improve the performance of wastewater treatment systems. - The role of nature-based solutions in a circular water economy - New concepts to reach a sustainable society, focusing on the new tool of circular economy. - Identify and test various reuse options of waste, either water or solids (e.g., agricultural irrigation, industrial process recycling, resource recovery, biogas production etc.) as part of a circular economy. I am always open to new collaborations, partnerships and knowledge exchange.
