About Stefan Benkowski Mt-Bc

Musically, I pride myself on my knowledge and expertise on a wide variety of styles and genres. I grew up being trained classically on violin, piano and trombone. I picked up the guitar and bass when I was 14, taught myself, and never looked back. While I maintained my classical training and practicing skills, I focused exclusively on rock, folk and jazz. After a year of studying jazz performance (trombone) at NYU, I followed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and joined the independent pop-rock band We The Living, where I ran the Myspace/Facebook and toured/slept in a van for two years. While it was life-changing, I felt that I was meant for bigger and better things, so I left the band to pursue my passion for music therapy. At ASU, I studied the human psyche, how we develop as people, and how to use the power of music to influence/improve behavior and mood. Currently I work a wide range of part time music therapy positions around New York City, specializing in children with a variety of special needs.My goals are ever-changing, but they all revolve around improving people's lives. Currently, I dream of getting a doctoral degree in some form of counseling/social work, creating my own life counseling private practice (marriage, family, etc.) and eventually creating my own undergraduate music therapy program. At the moment I'm fascinated with wellness and how to use music to spark creativity as well as emotional responses.I've also just begun a research project to study the relationship between music and our identity.
