Challenges towards sustainable aquafeedsSeveral national and international reports have indicated the limited access to fish meal and fish oil for the rapidly growing aquaculture. There is a high need to develop more sustainable aquafeeds that rely less on marine ingredients. The development of new sustainable feed with plant ingredients will introduce improvements as well as new challenges that were previously not relevant by use of traditional marine feed ingredients. The increased use of vegetable oils has been shown to substantially reduce persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in farmed salmonids. However, the use of new feed ingredients also introduces new chemical contaminants. The increased replacement of marine ingredients with plant ingredients has increased the need for knowledge of new nutrients and contaminants and especially on interactions and common biological outcome. Nutrient-contaminant interactions can occur at several levels of biological organization including intestinal uptake, peripheral distribution, and/or central cellular pathways. The current project aims: to explore the interactions of vegetable ingredient related contaminants and nutrients with emphasis on generating basic knowledge on the combined effect by use of biological indicators in model systems at different levels of biological organization.Used techniques- Whole body autoradiogram.- Intestinal transepithelial transport of contaminants in Ussing chambers.- Effects of contaminants on enzymes involved in lipid digestion and triglyceride reassembly.- Transmembrane transport of contaminants in isolated brush-border membrane vesicles.http://www.ru.nl/animal/ep/staff/gelder/
