SGA was a 100-person "internal startup” focused on developing and marketing software solutions for utilities and commercial and industrial clients. SGA was created to coordinate Siemens' smart grid efforts across all Siemens businesses. Solutions included load management, demand response, management of distributed power generation and storage, smart metering, and electric vehicle charging.

The 40-person organization identified promising technology innovations from startups, universities, research labs, and engineering companies; developed business cases; and commercialized new offerings in industrial automation, automotive, energy and communication. This was achieved through early-stage investments and incubation of startups and internal development projects.
