An experienced social entrepreneur and social justice advocate, Stefanie Brown James is the Co-Founder of The Collective – a consortium of organizations including The Collective PAC and Collective Future – dedicated to recruiting, training, funding and supporting black candidates to run for office on the local, state and federal level. Founded in August of 2016, The Collective has raised over $6.5 million dollars from 47,000+ individual contributions and organizations to help 53 endorsed candidates win and launched a national training operation -- The Black Campaign School -- to prepare black candidates and campaign operatives to win.

Stefanie is the CEO and Founding Partner of Vestige Strategies, LLC, a Washington, DC-based public affairs firm that specializes in grassroots community and civic engagement strategies. Passionate about the empowerment of Black women, Stefanie is the Founder of Brown Girls Lead, Inc., a leadership development organization focused on helping collegiate and professional women cultivate the skills they need to effect positive social change on their campuses and in their communities. Since its inception in 2011, 59 young ladies (and 61 mentors) have benefited from the hands-on leadership development instruction and guidance they've received through the Brown Girls Lead Academy – an engaging, eight month program for Black, collegiate women that focuses on three core leadership development components: Personal Empowerment, Professional Enrichment and Public Engagement.

In 2012, Stefanie served as the National African American Vote Director for the Obama for America Campaign. In this position, Stefanie organized the African Americans for Obama program and managed the national strategy to engage African American leaders and voters to register and re-elect President Barack Obama. As a result, Stefanie’s work contributed greatly to the historic turnout of the African American community which voted at a higher rate than white voters for the first time; approximately 66.2 percent of eligible Black voters cast ballots in 2012.

Stefanie served as the National Field Director for the NAACP in Baltimore, Maryland - developing and administering the national field organizing strategy for the NAACP’s 2,200 branches, youth councils, high school and college chapters. Concurrently, Stefanie served as the National Director of the NAACP Youth & College Division representing 23,000 youth under the age of 25 around the country.

As the National Director of the NAACP Youth & College Division, Stefanie led the national youth program of the Association for more than 600 youth councils, high school and college chapters representing over 23,000 young people under the age of 25. Under her leadership, the Division created the “STOP Campaign” – aimed at addressing negative images of Black youth in the media; the “Campaign to End Campus Racism”; the EMERGE Leadership Development Institute and the “2008 Vote Hard Campaign” – a youth voter empowerment initiative with the NAACP National Voter Fund that registered over 20,000 people.

Created the Black Student Justice Network to educate and engage African American college students across the country in domestic and international advocacy efforts.

As the Project Coordinator of the Stopping AIDS is My Mission program, Stefanie lead a team of high school aged peer counselors to provide education about HIV/AIDS and STD prevention to students in Job Corps, detention facilities and runaway shelters.
