- Part of the senior leadership team that leads a newsroom of about 160 journalists. - I oversee the features department, our Sunday magazine and staff development. This includes charting editorial strategy and using data to help drive audience growth. On the staff development front, I come up with initiatives and programs to foster a sense of belonging in the newsroom and keep morale up. For instance, I oversee the newsroom's mentorship and internship programs.- Conceived, planned and executed the inaugural (2024) Best of the PNW College Journalism Symposium for student journalists.- Conceived and project managed newsroom-wide projects.- Oversee hiring for the departments I manage- Coach managers in leadership and day-to-day operations.
Features Editor
- Led a department of 15 journalists and oversaw coverage of food and drink, travel and outdoors, and arts and entertainment. - Used analytics and data to make strategic coverage situations that drove subscriber growth. As a result, in five years from 2019-2023, the number of subscriptions influenced by Features stories annually increased by more than 72%. Over the same five-year span, the number of annual pageviews from Features stories increased by 22%, and the number of unique users increased by 20%.- Led coverage that resulted in 10 Society for Features Journalism awards during my tenure.- Worked with reporters to ideate, brainstorm and run beats to produce useful, unique, interesting and relevant stories for our readers.- Hired new staffers and interns, and built an ambitious, creative team of reporters, editors and production-side journalists.- Managed the Features budget competently and creatively, finding ways to cut down on inefficiencies while repurposing funds to ensure the best use of our resources and align our coverage needs with audience demand. For instance, over five years. I bolstered our editing staff and our food writing staff and added an outdoors reporter and a communities reporter while staying mostly budget neutral.
