UCL Be The Change is large student-led initiative consisting of medical and pharmacy students, running throughout the year and working on quality improvement projects. The initiative was born out the notion that medical students and allied health care professionals can see hospitals in a different light to managers. We want to propose a model how students can work (for free) with experienced professionals to improve patient care and make our NHS more efficient!We won the NHS Quality Improvement Championship 2016. The competition took place in March in the BMA house. The judging panel comprised of representatives from the Health Foundation, Department of Health, NHS England, McKinsey, Institute for Healthcare Improvement and Directors of all five London Medical Schools. The trophy was given by Dr Andy Mitchell, Director of NHS England-London.

Worked as a research assistant with Kim Butts Pauly’s lab for four weeks in August. During this time, I participated in the group meetings and presented at the weekly journal club. In particular, the current literature on longitudinal assessment of repetitive blood-brain barrier (BBB) opening with focused ultrasound (FUS). With the lab’s graduates and fellows I learned more about the animal models applying FUS for neurostimulation and transiently opening the BBB in tumor environments. While contributing to ongoing studies, I honed my skill set on techniques for mouse brain dissection, brain cryosectioning and slice staining.Additionally, I spent time with the CyberKnife team following the multi-disciplinary team of neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists and physicists.⎯ Assisted with contouring of stereotactic radiosurgery targets and radiosensitive structures⎯ Attended neuro-oncology case conferences⎯ Observed initial investigation or follow-up of patients with the neuro-radiology team

I spent a week in January during the high season in Dr. Rhomberg’s ski clinic and hospital in Lech. During this time I would spend my mornings and afternoon participating and helping with patient diagnosis, diagnostic imaging and initial treatment of the patients. The patients primarily presented with a torn anterior torn anterior cruciate ligament, sometimes extending to the unhappy triad, broken radius, rotator cuff pain, scapula fracture, back pain, and depressed patella. During the evenings I would assist in the operating room, where there were at least two operations everyday. I sutured the patients and helped with instruments in the arthroscopic procedures.
