I am working as a PhD researcher for the Computer Science and Engineering school at UNSW. My research project will involve dialogue act tags and their role in Dialogue Agents and Natural Language Processing/Understanding

I worked as a Chatbot Developer for the episode "Matt Okine Is Going To Die" of the science journalism TV program "Catalyst". My contribution to the episode was the design and implementation of "MattBot", an experimental dialogue agent which mimics the speaking style of the episode's protagonist with the goal of simulating how a "legacy chatbot" (i.e. a chatbot designed to replicate the feeling of speaking to a deceased individual) could potentially work in the future. I fine-tuned the GPT-3 model for the study, using the HuggingFace transformer libraries in Python. I also performed various experimental studies on the fine-tuning of the chatbot, collecting and cleaning up various data sources and experimenting with various parameters of the GPT-3 model. The bot was featured in the episode which aired on September 5th 2023

I have worked as a Machine Learning engineer for Babylon Health as part of the Applied Machine Learning team. I contributed to the Intent Recognition and Natural Language Understanding pipeline of the Babylon app and led the development of a suite of libraries and microservices to automatically anonymize and de-identify sensitive data within the company.

Working on the NLU pipeline of the Olly robot, as well as other research tasks associated with Natural Language Processing.

For the academic year 2016-2017 I was selected to compete with a university team in the Alexa Prize challenge, a competition to advance conversational AI. Our goal was to develop a social bot for Amazon Alexa enabled devices able to hold coherent and meaningful conversations about popular topics like sports, politics and entertainment. My main contribution to the project was the implementation of the SLU pipeline and the Intent recognition system. I also gave major contributions to the design and development of the Dialog Manager and some minor contribution to the information retrieval system.
