About Stefano Semprini
Hello & welcome,I grew up as a privileged South African. Contrary to my personal experience, my country of birth is an unjust and unforgiving environment for very many (if not the majority) of its people. Not a single day goes by that I do not encounter the brokenness of a society that, for decades, geared its economy and culture to meet the needs and wants of a culturally- and racially-homogenous minority. Furthermore, the post-Apartheid era has achieved little more than pay lip service to the practicalities of “a better life for all”, which should have been borne of the ideal, free society that millions fought for. And, it is worth noting: even in the most challenging of conditions, I have seen the human spirit thrive, fostering community-based care with courage and grace. In my personal case, Apartheid gave me two things: a historically-entrenched advantage to become well educated and prosperous; and, of far more value to me, a perspective that rejected the commonly accepted boons of “progress”. It was this perspective that fostered my curiosity, an insatiable questioning. Inevitably, this questioning of the status quo began to approach root causes…Between 2012 and 2017, Curiosity led me into working in the solar energy industry, and into starting my biomimicry learning journey.Between spring (in the southern hemisphere) of 2017 and 2020, Curiosity led me to extensive travel, and a self-directed yet rigorous education program, in which I studied: systems thinking, regenerative agriculture, social process methodologies, and much more. Between winter of 2020 and spring of 2023, Curiosity led me to be based in Ireland, where: for the first year I lived as a volunteer (“Workaway-er”) and found - what was for me - a healthier balance between knowledge work and physical, tactile and technical work; and, for the latter two years, I lived in a small, far-flung town, working remotely with a team based in Dublin. During this time, Curiosity also led me to achieving certain milestones with my biomimicry learning journey, which in turn led to my becoming co-director of BiomimicrySA.Now, Curiosity and I are still friends, we’re just not working together so much these days. We’re engaging more in spaces of creativity and play, outside of working hours. It was a different motivation which led me in my return to South Africa in the Spring of 2023: a hunger for groundedness and rootedness, a deeper connection to people and place, and an urge to build for the long-term.If this story resonates, let’s (re)connect. I invite you to reach out, let’s talk.
