While on internship with the Rhode Island State Police i would report to the Wickford Barracks in North Kingstown Rhode Island at 9:00am. My responsibilities varied day by day, most of the days i was on the road with a trooper doing car stops or responding to calls. On other days i stayed at the barracks filling reports or i went with a Corporal to district court to watch how arraignments were done.

Providence, Rhode Island Area

While on internship with the providence BCI unit my daily duties were, when I arrived at 8:45 in the morning I would file the crime cards which have been previously taken out to either check for repeat offenders or for new offenders who got their finger prints taken. After filing the cards around 10:30 – 11 I would go out to house breaks with two of the BCI detectives, watch and learn how to obtain finger prints from different objects touched by the perpetrator and how to talk to the victims in order to find out everything that happened, what was touched, what was moved, etc. On one of the days I was able to finger print objects obtained from a heroin bust, using lead and graphite dusting to feather over objects to see if any finger prints showed up. I happened to find the only finger print on all the evidence under the lid of a vacuum sealer machine. I also had the experience of going to the medical examiner’s office and seeing how autopsies are done, where the bodies are stored and how the brain of a mentally ill person is removed in order to conduct research on that specific illness. During my ride along our first call was to a shots fired at a well known gang house in the area known as the “get money fam” (GMF). I was able to get out of the car listen to the officers find out information from witnesses, talk to the perpetrator, and look for the gun that was used to fire the shots. Also during my ride along I got to witness how a domestic despite is handled along with a child custody incident and a minor accident.
