About Stefan Shaw

I’m a Creative Director with a passion for distinctive design, engaging stories and delightful technology experiences. If you cut me open you would see digital at my core but over the years I've explored many outputs including branding, photography, film, print and experiential - all of which compliment my core digital expertise.Creative Skills: Strategy / Concept / Writing / Pitching / Production / DirectionManagement skills: I have sat on the board of companies and managed the career development and growth of teams. I am most at home in the creative work, developing and nurturing ideas, pitching them to clients, and aiding their delivery into something special.Clients: Over the 20 odd years I’ve been doing this I’ve probably used most of the formats available to the modern marketer/creative! I’ve also worked with a really broad selection of clients exploring what's possible in our ever changing landscape. This has included Levi’s, Lynx, Velvet, Schweppes, Toyota, Lexus, Oxfam, Refuge, Chester Zoo, Thorpe Park, Paramount Pictures International, Twentieth Century Fox, Optimum Releasing, Sony Pictures, Sony PlayStation in the consumer space. The BBC in the broadcast and editorial space (including social publishing). And most recently BT, Blizzard Games, GVC, Natwest Group, DAZN, Continental, VF, Nordstrom, Harrods and many more - in the world of Employer Branding.Awards: I’ve been lucky to pick up a few of these along the way including an FWA Mobile of the Day, Drum Marketing Awards, Social Impact Awards, Big Chip Awards, Creative Showcase Awards, various NMA awards (including Effectiveness Awards), a BVA award for Agency of the Year - all for my work in the consumer and entertainment marketing space. At the BBC my work for the drama Thirteen, was shortlisted at the BBC Production Awards and Broadcast Digital Awards. Which was lovely. And in 2020 we had a bumper year at Ph Creative winning 15 awards across the EBMA's, FIRM awards, Recruitment Marketing Awards.Industry: For twelve years I was a judge at the IAB’s Creative Showcase Awards. I’m also a comfortable speaker having recently showcased projects like Thirteen at events held by the BBC on the topic of social media broadcast/storytelling. In 2020 I joined the BIMA 100 and have also taken a seat on their Creative Council.(Please see below for examples of my work...)

So, what can you expect from me?You might be a consumer, entertainment or employer brand agency and you need some quick ideas*; headlines, a script for a social video or an ad – no worries, I’ve got you. (*including pitches).Likewise, you’ve got a bigger project, and you need someone to steer it, there are lots of moving parts and there’s the opportunity for it to be great. I’ve got bags of experience in this space and can direct lots of different outputs. You might work client side with your own in-house creative team but be missing a bit of experience; digital, social or employer brand for example. I can help your team learn and excel. Or maybe you don’t have an in-house team, but you want a lean solution over an agency. Let’s focus on your challenge and fix it. You might be a film or TV production company and you understand the marketing advantages of approaches like gamified or immersive storytelling and want someone who has experience in this space. Someone who can collaborate with your creative teams on the production and make the most of this opportunity. I’ve got you here too.Ah, that immersive storytelling phrase! Yes, over the years and for different clients, I’ve worked on projects that have really pushed audience experience, storytelling and innovation. For examples of this, check out my work for BT, BBC Three, Refuge Charity and Thorpe Park. The aim of this work is drive high levels of audience engagement, and based on these examples – it works! So, I also offer my knowledge and experience as an "Immersive Storytelling Specialist".Finally – having been around entertainment marketing and the entertainment industry for such a long time, I am now also producing my own entertainment IP. This is work that I’m writing/producing/directing. It’s a way to further push my creativity and pay homage to the genre movies, TV shows and podcasts, that I love.Sound interesting or useful, please reach out and let’s have a chat.

The Digital Guerrillas is a content innovation team set up to serve young audiences with next generation TV content from the BBC. When I joined there was a blank canvas, so I drove the shape of the team from the skills we would need, to the staff we hired, the spec of the studio and even the visual identify of the group. I now oversee its day-to-day creative output as the team’s Creative Lead.Highlights so far have included:‘#Findthegirl’ – a parallel online story conceived to drive engagement in BBC Three’s new video on demand drama Thirteen. Produced in conjunction with the show and it’s writer, #findthegirl included a live social media character that guided the audience through video, image and interactive content as they joined an investigation to find a missing girl: Case study video - https://vimeo.com/167859451#Findthegirl was also shortlisted for a Broadcast Digital Award for Best Programme Support in 2016.‘Ramadan in a day’ – a live social media broadcast from sunrise to sunset delivered in conjunction with Asian Network and Religion & Ethics for Taster: http://bbcramadaninaday.tumblr.comRamadan in a day was shortlisted for a BBC Production Award in 2016.‘No think dinners’ – worked with BBC Food to help launch their Instagram account with this no-nonsense cooking guide. It ran as a pilot for one week delivering a different meal each day over a series of video assets native to Instagram: Example recipe - https://vimeo.com/205874063Taking over BBC Three’s Snapchat account with a series of editorial pilots, including the human endeavour strand ‘Life on the Line’ and the conspiracy strand ‘Don’t Tap’.Life on the Line example - https://vimeo.com/205866720Don’t Tap example - https://vimeo.com/205871706 See more of my team’s work here: http://www.bbcdigitalguerrillas.co.ukShort form video / social media broadcast / bespoke interactive content / mobile / gamification - The Digital Guerrillas cover this and more…
