About Judge Stefany Tewell (Ret.)
For 16 years I worked as a District Court Judge in Las Vegas, Nevada. During my time on the bench I have worked in the Civil, Criminal and Family courts. Prior to my election, I was in private practice for nine years specializing in civil litigation. As one of the largest courts in the United States, the Clark County District Court services a population of approximately 2.3 million residents. As a District Court Judge I am responsible for managing an average yearly caseload of over 2000 active civil and criminal cases. In addition to overseeing all litigation and discovery issues, I am also responsible for handling all cases upon remittitur from the Court of Appeals or the Nevada Supreme Court. In addition to overseeing all litigation issues I am also responsible for handling issues related to attorney performance including review of attorney’s fees and adherence to the ethical rules. I have been appointed by the Governor of Nevada as an alternate Supreme Court Justice on a case involving attorney discipline and disbarment. As part of this appointment, I deliberated with the Supreme Court and assisted in authoring an unpublished opinion related to attorney disbarment. In my role as Judge I am often privy to information and exhibits protected by privilege. It is my responsibility to protect the privileged nature of the communications and exhibits and to ensure that my staff does the same. Many of the cases heard by my Court have been the subject of extensive public and media scrutiny. As a member of the judiciary I have worked with attorneys and other judges to draft and implement local court rules and state rules of civil and criminal procedure. As part of the day to day operations of my court, I oversee the work product, discipline and training of my staff as well as other Court employees. I also work with other judges and court administration to prepare the annual budget for Court operations as well as the funding other court programs. Further, in managing my Court department, it is also my responsibility to prepare quarterly and yearly reports to the Supreme Court and Nevada Legislature regarding case statistics including litigation status and time to disposition. I believe my vast experience working with attorneys, members of the public and other Court personnel have provided me with a diversity of experience enabling me to be successful in a wide variety of legal environments.
