In the music business for almost 40 years, including many years as a technical director and production manager for dozens of nightclubs and venues in New York, Maui, HI, and San Francisco, CA. Many years as an independent artist, producer, and engineer for over 50 recording projects. 15 years of national tour managing (Mix Master Mike, Linton "Kwesi" Johnson, Lee "Scratch" Perry) and running an independent "conscious" reggae record label with over 20 releases. Currently, Steffen is running and building Independent Distribution Collective, a 1000-label independent marketing, promotion and distribution company he founded in 2004. In 2013, Steffen was appointed President of Tarpan Records, a record label owned and founded by Multi-Platinum, Grammy Winner Narada Michael Walden. Also, Steffen speaks at many industry events, teaches music business, and consults with a handful of musical artists and small businesses.For the past few years, Steffen has also been an in-demand show-caller, technical director, and technical producer for over 150 large corporate events and conferences. He currently works with 3 or 4 event production companies and also freelances for different corporate and NPO clients. In July 2021, Steffen was hired as the production manager of Golden Gate Park Bandshell in San Francisco. This 125-year-old, iconic venue is producing a series of shows (4 days a week, 600 since 2021) that Steffen also books and produces. These shows, in partnership with Internationally known arts non-profit Illuminate The Arts have expanded to Civic Center Soundtrack, a 3 day per week series in Fulton Plaza, and a 2 day a week concert series during the summer on JFK Promenade at the Whale's Tail Garden in Golden Gate Park. In 2024, on behalf of Illuminate and SF's Office of Economic Workforce Development, Steffen produced 20 concerts as part of the free SF Live concert series.
