I am currently leading the Bioenergy Research Group at the University of Illinois at Chicago - Energy Resources Center. Research activities focus on life cycle emissions analyses of different biofuel and electric vehicle pathways, quantification of carbon emissions and sequestration effects from production agriculture and bioproducts from agriculture, and certification and verification of sustainable fuel and product supply chains. We utilizes the latest versions of MOVES, GREET, AVERT, and other modeling tools.Recently, I have been serving as a technical expert to the US Grains Council on the sustainability of US produced biofuels and bioproducts for export markets and presented my research in Japan, Korea, China, India, Vietnam, Columbia, and Mexico. In 2010, I served on the Expert Working Group on Land Use during the establishment of the California Low Carbon Fuel Standard. In 2021, I served on the National Academies of Sciences Committee on Current Methods for Life Cycle Analyses of Low-Carbon Transportation Fuels and since 2013 I have been serving on the Board of International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC). In parallel, I have been commercializing several geospatial crop technologies jointly developed by my research group and my colleague Ken Copenhaver.
