About Steffi Fritsche

I’m a plant biotechnologist with a passion for plant and tree biology and thus plant breeding, genetics, genomics and molecular phytopathology were the key aspects of my education.Why I study trees? “…of all good things we get from trees, wood is, perhaps, nature’s most wonderful gift to humanity” (Kumar, 1994). Besides wood trees are our source for fuel, food, raw materials, drugs and so much more. They have a unique role in our lives and their utility is undeniable. Who doesn’t like to walk through a forest and breathe fresh clean forest air? My current position at Scion, a Crown forest research institute, allows me to expand my knowledge and passion for forest trees as I am studying genes which will help to further improve tree breeding. What is qualifying me? - Nine years of research experience and bringing project leading as well as teaching experience.- Excellent skills in molecular plant biology and genetics with focus on marker development, in vitro tissue culture, and gene function and regulation analysis. Experience in biochemistry (HPLC/ NIRS samples) and microscopy (histochemical staining methods). - I am through and through a resource investigator and team worker. I’d like to explore opportunities and develop contacts. - I am highly motivated, organized, independent and quick learner. Especially, working abroad developed my self-reliance and adaptability in international teams and to changing situations.- One of my secret passions though is that I am interested in mentoring youth and woman in science and research, which I pursue at the moment through volunteering as a judge in local science fairs and following the activities of the SCWIST and AUST societies.
