    Brazil produces billions of liters of biodiesel every year. As a part of the process, the fatty acids and glycerol of the soy oil are separated from each other, where crude glycerol is a waste by-product. Crude glycerol, among others, contains a big portion of water, sodium chloride and cinder. Because purifying is energy and cost intense, other application options must be explored. From a purely chemical point of view, glycerol is perfectly suitable for the polyol part of the polyurethane synthesis. Thus, the task of this research was to develop, prepare and characterize rigid polyurethane foams largely based on unmodified crude glycerol for use as insulation foams in construction.
