Michael Steinhardt aka מייקל שטיינהרט is an American philanthropist, publisher and businessman. He began his career in the 1960s working for several companies in the financial services sector including Calvin Bullock and Loeb, Rhoades & Company. In 1967 he founded the hedge fund Steinhardt, Fine, Berkowitz & Co. After almost 30 years he retired from the hedge fund, re-emerging in 1994 with the launch of Wisdom Tree, which is the 7th largest ETF index fund in the United States. Steinhardt is an active philanthropist with a special focus on causes related to Jewish causes. His largesse is directed through The Steinhardt foundation for Jewish Life. He is one of the founders of Birthright Israel which he still supports generously. He is the Co-Chairman of the Areivim Philanthropic Group and supports Jewish education through the strengthening of Hebrew Language Charter Schools; Hillel at the University of Pennsylvania; the Steinhardt School of culture, Education, and Human Development of New York University; Tel Aviv University and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.He published his memoirs in 2001 in the book, “No Bull: My Life in and Out of the Markets.” Also, in 2001 Steinhardt launched a newspaper in New York City, the New York Sun.
