West Encounters East explores the themes of immigration, alienation and assimilation through the works of Japanese Brazilian artists, descendants of a century-old diaspora that has given São Paulo the largest Japanese population outside Japan.I developed this concept inspired by the works of these bicultural artists to embark upon a personal journey of discovery.West Encounters East, the first of a series, was shown on more than 280 public television channels across the U.S.My second documentary film, A Journey to the Soul of Guna Yala, told the story of an encounter between a group of students in the Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami's innovative ArtLab @ The Lowe museum studies program and the indigenous Guna people inhabiting Panama's remote San Blas islands. The film, which focuses on the importance of the mola – a unique textile art – in Guna history and culture, debuted on WPBT2 South Florida PBS and was nominated for a 2018 Suncoast Regional EMMY Award. Now in production, The Fragility of Tradition, the second documentary in the West Encounters East series, continues the conversation between East and West through an examination of new directions in traditional Japanese arts and crafts.
