STEP UP DE is a non-profit organization that aims to empower low-income and at-risk youth in the community through mentorship, workshops, and other hands-on initiatives. “STEP UP DE” stands for Students Thriving in Excellence & Purpose UP in Delaware. Through our volunteerism, we strive to educate and encourage youth in low-community high schools to pursue higher education. Statistics show that only 1 in 10 of students from low-income households get the chance to go to college, while 50% of all children from high-income families get the college experience. College is a microcosm (mini-version) in preparation for the real world. Every young person who dreams of going to college should have the chance to, irregardless of their families’ financial hardships. STEP UP DE works with the University of Delaware, Newark Parks & Recs as well as other collaborators to tutor and mentor elementary school youth. Our workshops connect younger students with college-level mentors to provide positive representation and better equip them for success.
