-Working on the Staying Close pilot, I will be working with care experienced young people in residential childrens home and semi independant accomodation, to help them get into and sustain EET. -I will also be liasing with the young person, their personal advisor and other organisations involved to help them overcome barriers that may hinder them when looking for work.-I will also be in communication with the young person and their college, training provider or employer to support and advocate for the young person whilst in EET, to make sure their needs are met.

I have engaged in child protection, safeguarding and diversity training which has helped me learn about the different types of abuse and the possible indicators. I also acquired an understanding of policies and procedures with regards to safeguarding as well as the importance of the professional boundaries when working with young people. I have successfully completed peer mentoring training which has taught me how to be a good listener and how to record information confidentially. This training has been put to use, as I have actively been involved in the blunt project. This has allowed me to carry out 1 on 1 support with young people who have been identified as being involved in possible knife crime. I have been encouraging those who have been identified, to take part in the sessions at Madhlo. For those who disengage from the blunt project, I have supported them through encouragement and motivation to actively take part. I have also been involved in supporting the support worker with missing from homes and the ISS programme.

I have been involved in working with a range of different agencies, from the leaving care team to employers, in order to help care leavers overcome the barriers they face. Alongside my supervisor, I have been helping young people put together CV’s and prepare for work interviews. Whilst here, I have also learnt about the barriers care leavers may face and how they may begin to self-sabotage when things get tough. I have also taken part in team building and training days. One of these training days was with Papyrus who taught us about the signs of suicide.

I completed this work placement as part of a module within my Criminology degree, whilst I was here I:• Learnt about the overall running of the prison.• Identified issues around mental health and addiction prisoners may have.• Became aware of issues of safety that prison officers may face.• Worked to agreed standards and procedure at all times, especially in regard to confidentiality.• Developed my communication skills with members of staff and prisoners.• Gained a knowledge of all the services available within the prison and how they may help with desistance.
