As a mental health support worker with Creative Support, I work across three supported accommodation houses and across the local community, caring for adult service users who have a variety of mental health difficulties.My daily duties involve prompting and observing individuals with medication, liaising with care coordinators, medical professionals, and family members, and supporting service users to feel listened to and strengthen their independent living skills. I try to promote a positive and supportive environment for individuals to flourish, and organise regular activities for service users to encourage them to be social and engage in meaningful tasks.

Within GMNL, I developed from a volunteer to trainer and was voted into the role as Head of Training by the organisation members. In this role, I delivered presentations twice a week to all trainees and trainers, covering topics that may come up during calls and guided the trainees to deal with these types of calls. I often invited guest speakers from external organisations to discuss topics from their perspective within training sessions.The experience within this role has helped me develop my public speaking skills, effective researching, and professionalism.

Greater Manchester Nightline is a confidential, anonymous, non-judgemental listening helpline run by students for students across multiple universities in Manchester. I volunteered with GMNL for my first two years at university. I would regularly take calls on 8pm - 8am shifts from students needing guidance or simply needing to talk; helping vulnerable individuals who were struggling with sensitive issues from academic stress to mental health difficulties.This has helped me develop a supportive role to people in need and has given me the skills for productive communication with vulnerable individuals.

After a year with the organisation, I joined the GMNL committee as socials organiser to uplift the community spirit for the 200+ members within the organisation. The members often face difficult calls, therefore it is important for them to have fun and relax outside of their job. As socials organiser, I could show care and acknowledgement for the great job that the members do. This role developed my organisation and leadership skills as well as my communication skills when speaking to new members of the organisation and helping to build friendships within the group.
